Pick up the pen.
Just pick up the damn thing and write.
Write about everything.
Write about nothing at all (it worked for Seinfeld).
Write about what chills you to the bone.
About what breaks your heart.
About what makes you laugh out loud.
About regrets (are they still keeping that interpreter position at the United Nations open for me?)
Write about a mistake that led to something wonderful.
Write about a childhood disappointment (like the time your artist’s dreams were crushed when you made a mess of your Ivory soap sculpture in fourth grade)
Write about someone who bet her whole life on getting something—and then didn’t.
About someone who got what she thought she wanted—but it wasn’t what she wanted after all.
Write about a Facebook update (irate year-round islander with melting ice cream is suspect when the tourists who crowd her out in the ferry lane—and make her miss the boat— vanish without a trace).
Write about a secret you have never shared with anyone.
Write about the best day of your life.
Write about the worst.
Find the pieces that connect.
Now tell your story.
Write as if your very life depended on it.
Because it just might.
